The Talbert Memorial Fund, through the vehicles of inspirational events, creative services, and purposeful products, provides access to mental and emotional health services for those traumatized by violence, specifically gun violence. Our aim is to dispel the myths surrounding counseling, therapy, and mental health within our cultural context so that black men can receive the help and healing that will lead to health and wholeness.
The Talbert Memorial Fund was created to honor the lives of Russell Talbert III who at the age of 21, was murdered on October 27, 1997. Twenty years later on August 30, 2017, his nephew, Jalen Talbert, also 21, was murdered. These two young men along with countless others, were taken much too young through acts of senseless gun violence.
JALEN TALBERT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND
The Jalen Talbert Memorial Scholarship Fund honors the memory of Jalen Talbert, a vibrant soul whose life was tragically cut short by gun violence in August 2017. Jalen's journey was one of unorthodox aspirations, leading him to pursue audio engineering and recording, where he stood on the precipice of realizing his dreams, merely six months from graduation.
In his spirit, the Talbert Memorial Scholarship Fund is awarded annually in August upon individuals who have experienced the tragic loss of a parent due to murder and are channeling their personal pain into a profound passion for education. The family of Jalen Talbert is here to stand with you, providing assistance as you begin a journey of healing and growth, while pursuing your educational aspirations.
Whether you're pursuing scholarly endeavors or honing hands-on skills in a trade, we are committed to providing resources and opportunities to empower students, especially those who have lost a parent to gun violence, on their unique educational path. While heartbreaking for the Talbert family, this story is too common for black families living in and directly outside of Chicago.
Both Russell and Jalen, like many young men, had promising futures and aspirations they will never realize. Both Russell and Jalen, like many other men had loving families, an education, jobs, responsibilities and big hearts. Both Russell and Jalen, like many other men are not nameless, faceless, worthless members of society. They are not a statistic.
The cycle has to stop.
The cycle of violence and also cycles of pain and heartbreak the violence leaves behind must stop. To that end, the Talbert Family is honoring their lives and we have created The Talbert Memorial Fund which will support Jalen Journey's initiatives and work with experts to create programs specifically designed to work with young men of color who feel suffocated by the cycle of violence and what they see as bleak options for their future.
